Where and when was the dyslexia@bay System founded?
The system has been devised by Martin Murphy, who taught in Dublin, Ireland for 23 years and who has been working with students, who have dyslexia, for a considerable period of time. Teaching students with dyslexia using traditional methods yielded limited results considering the students' obvious levels of intelligence. By appreciating that discrete locations in the brain are used in concert for different learning methods, he designed a screening method to identify the learning profiles for different students including those students with dyslexia. By identifying the similarities and the differences in learning profiles, and hence the locations in the brain being used, the dyslexia@bay System evolved. The system is being continuously improved using the feedback of other teachers, parents and students.
Does the dyslexia@bay System involve any form of medication or training apparatus or ongoing expenses?
The simple answer is "No". During the consultation the parent(s) are shown how to carry out the mental (and sometimes physical) exercises with the students. Parents are also shown the reading method that interlinks with the programme. A full Instruction Pack will be given for use at home.
Is the dyslexia@bay System available in the United States or other countries not on the List of Consultants?
We are actively looking for suitable candidates to train in all countries, including the United States, and the materials used in training will be translated into German and Dutch. The list of countries will increase as suitable individuals apply for training.
What is the meaning of the title?
To "keep an enemy at bay" means that the enemy is controlled and the situation becomes non-threatening. In the same way students using the dyslexia@bay System find that by using different learning strategies reading, writing and spelling are no longer the threat they once were.
What is the idea behind the logo?
Obviously the "d" symbolizes dyslexia and the "b" symbolizes bay. Using the "@" for at is now common in our modern high tech world of e-mails and websites. The dyslexia@bay System is part of the new world. Whereas there is value in tradition there is also value in progress and new attitudes and new methodology. The logo is meant to symbolize the new learning strategies available to students with dyslexia. Also d and b are the most commonly confused letters for students with dyslexia.
